A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) is an outlet with a test button and a reset button. It can detect if an electrical current is escaping the wiring in an appliance or power tool and taking a shortcut to the ground. If a human is in the path of the wayward current, electric shock or even electrocution can occur. GFCI outlets shut off when these ground faults occur.
